How to start a shoe resale business in the UK

Ladies' footwear is one of the most reliable resale categories: it sells all year, sizes are standard, and a single wholesale carton is cheap enough to test an idea. Here is a practical way to start.

1. Pick your sales channel first

Where you sell decides what you should buy. Market stalls and car boots favour comfort flats and sandals at impulse prices. eBay, Vinted and Depop reward branded-looking fashion styles with good photos. TikTok Shop and Instagram lean towards trend-led heels and embellished sandals. Choose one channel to start — you can add more later.

2. Sort the basics

You can start as a sole trader with HMRC registration — it takes minutes online. Open a separate bank account for the business so costs and profit are easy to track. If you sell online, factor in platform fees (typically 10–15%) and postage when you price.

3. Buy your first cartons

Open a free trade account with a UK wholesaler that holds its own stock. Start with two or three cartons of different styles rather than ten cartons of one style — you are learning what your customers buy. Each carton is 12 pairs in a fixed size run, so a three-carton test is 36 pairs of stock. Read our guide to buying wholesale shoes for how cartons and pricing work.

4. Price for a real margin

Take the per-pair cost (carton price ÷ 12), add your selling costs, and check the retail price still looks attractive. Most successful shoe resellers aim for 2–3× the per-pair cost. Ladies' fashion shoes bought at £6–£10 a pair commonly retail at £18–£30 depending on the channel.

5. Reorder winners, drop losers

After a few weeks you will know which styles move. Reorder those cartons and don't restock the slow ones — discount them to free up cash instead. Because UK stock arrives in days, you can run lean and reorder little and often rather than tying money up in inventory.
